Significant Writing Project
Project three was based on the integrating three different styles sources. The objective was to read humanistic, scientific, and social scientific articles and then effectively incorporated them to an original idea. Students had to read the sources, interpret their “they say”, and then come up with their own “I say”. The original argument was about the liberal arts and then the sources were used to support it. My paper was about how the liberal arts neglect to represent and cater to every student. The liberal arts tend to me more centered around white students and fail to benefit every student. The humanistic source was Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It supports my argument by giving a glimpse into how frustrating it can be for students to not be taught the full side of history. The scientific source was ““More Than Skin Deep”: Stress Neurobiology and Mental Health Consequences of Racial Discrimination” by Maximus Berger & Zoltán Sarnyai. This source stated that exclusion can lead to physical and mental harm, which occurs when students do not feel represented within education. Finally, the social scientific source was the “Effects of Diversity Experiences on Critical Thinking Skills Over 4 Years of College” by Ernest T. Pascarella et al.. This source provided the information on how white students can have improved critical thinking skills from diverse experiences. Therefore, both black and white students can benefit from an increase of representation in a liberal arts education.
